Location and health and safety

I'm going to take my photo/s at this skate park in Droitwich, i think this would be a good place to take it, because it goes well with my genre of my magazine.

Further comments
Steps
Someone could fall down the stairs and hurt themselves.
They could hold something on the side while walking down the steps

Other people skating
One of the skaters, could bump into them, and injure the person.
Stay away from the people skating, stay to the side of the skate park.

Leaning against a wall made of wood
There could be things sticking out of the wall, someone could get something stuck in them, and could seriously injure themselves.
They should check the wall before leaning against, just to make sure nothing is sticking out, which could potentially injure them.

The metal wired door
Someone could shut the door on someone’s fingers, and injure the person. Or they could shut the door by accident and could hit someone in the head.
The person shutting the door can look behind them before they shut the door, to see if anyone is there and to check it’s safe to shut.

People kicking footballs
Someone could kick a football and could injure a person walking past
They could kick in just a certain area of the place, so they are in no harm to hurt or injure someone around them.

Slippery flooring
It could have rained, and so the smooth floor could potentially be slippery, so someone could fall over and injure themselves.
They should not run if it’s been raining, they should walk.

Target Audience

The audience for my chosen music would be Hip Hop, who fall on the Jignar scale at A-C. between the age of 16-25. I would say my target audience would be known as a bit of a rebel, but at the same time, they go to college/ university, and study very hard to achieve theirs goals. But on the other side of college/ university, they like to party and listen to music. the main music they would listen to is the hip hop genre, which consists of artists, such as Lil Wayne, drake, Eminem.

My target audience would shop at shops like urban outfitters, there type of fashion is, hoodies and t-shirts, high tops. They all wear mainly nike High tops.

My target audience, loves going out on the weekend partying, so they like to get absolutely drunk, and have a good time. that's what most teenagers this age want to do, they want to go out and have some fun. so they either go to house parties, or they go clubbing with their friends, just to have a good time out.

My target audience will be interested in relationships, but they will put their friends first, so they will go out to parties with their partner, but they will have night ins with their friends. So they will make time for both. relationships like that, sometimes or always last, and then you wont loose the friends you have. they will enjoy night ins with their friends, watching their favourite films, doing their favourite stuff together.

Research of existing magazines

I am designing a magazine for the genre of Hip-Hop,  the target audience i am aiming at is teenagers, between the age of 15-20. In analyzing these two magazines because these go well with what i want to achieve, both these magazines are hip-hop, and both are targeted to the Teenager audience.

The magazine's target demographic is predominantly young, urban followers of Hip-hop culture. The publication predominantly features R&B and Hip-Hop music artists, actors and other entertainers. The Vibe magazine has used many techniques to attract the teenager audience. Vibe used bright colours, which attracts our attention to the masthead, which is the main name of the magazine. All the writing on this magazine, is all in capital letters, which makes the magazine stand out more. They use a sans serif font. There's the main picture in the middle of the page, the person stands out, because he's wearing a bright coloured, so he stands out, and it contrasts which the masthead behind him. The bright red 'callout' immediately attracts the attention of the audience, because its a bright, powerful colour to the rest of the magazine. Vibe Magazine was known for the creative direction of their covers.R&B singer Mary J. Blige repeatedly made the cover of Vibe, with countless articles following her career. The centre of visual interest is clearly Chris Brown. the main thing which would catch your eye straight away would clearly be the bright bed t-shirt, in the centre of the page. The look on his face connotes that he is angry, and also shows what type of magazine this is. The way he is sloughing connotes that he is a rebel, and that is quite relaxed, and also shows that this magazine will have many people like him in it. The magazine owed its success to featuring a broader range of interests than its closest competitors The Source and XXL which focus more narrowly on rap music, or the rock & pop-centric rolling Stones and Spin.

Katy Perry Talks Body Image, Fame and Politics in Rolling Stone Cover Story
Rolling stone Magazine changed its format in the 1990s to appeal younger readers, often focusing on young television or film actors and pop music. this led to criticism that the magazine was emphasizing style over substance. in recent years, the magazine has resumed its traditional mix of content, including in-depth  political stories and has seen its circulation increase. Rolling stones has maintained a website for many years, with selected current articles, reviews, blogs, MP3s, and other features such as searchable and free encyclopedic articles about artists, with images and sometimes sound clips of their work. The articles and reviews are sometimes in a revised form from the versions that are published. There are also selected archival political and cultural articles and entries. The site also at one time had an extensive message board forum. By the late 1990s, the message board forum at the site had developed into a thriving community with a large number of regular members and contributors worldwide. The rolling stones magazine has used many techniques to attract the teenagers audience, they have used a basic photo of a famous celebrity, a well known person. they have used subtle, but effective colours on the front cover of the magazine. they have used big bold letters for the masthead, to attract someones eye.

Theres a big bold masthead, which attracts the audience, from a far distance. they have also used a serif font, for the masthead, which also attracts a persons audience. The persons head contrasts well with the masthead, they have used effective colours, which helps attract someone's eye.

Evaluation

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
The features we spotted on the magazine covers we analysed, there was always a masthead on the top half of the magazine, which told us what it was called. We then saw on some magazine covers there were these bold callouts, but those were rare, there wasn't many. On most magazines there were headline, but they were quite small, they are just there telling us what would be in the magazine. And then most of all there was a big picture covering the whole of the magazine cover, which is the main thing, which should be on a magazine cover. On most magazines there is a splash which is the main front page story, that tends to be a lot bigger than the headlines. we included all these features in our own magazine. I found that most magazine cover mastheads tend to be capital letters, but we decided to be different and do our masthead in lower-case letters, probably to reduce the ascenders and the descenders.

2. Who would be the audience of your media product?
The audience for this media product is college students. We made our front cover look quite funky, which made it look more towards the college students audience, because it would attract more of that age. Also at C1 on the jicnar scale, and would also attract more radicals, people who want to be more individual.

3. How did you attract/address your audience?
I attracted the audience by using a different kind of font for the masthead but i also used a normal but also kind of funky font for the rest of the front cover to connote the funky look for the college students magazine. I thought that orange and yellow with be quite good colours for the front cover, because they are bright and colourful, so it would attract people, but i thought those colours would go well with the theme of the front cover. when taking the photograph for the background i wanted it to still go with the funky theme, so i thought the library would be a good place, because of the colourful books behind to connote the happiness and liveliness of the vibrant colours. For the rest of the texts on the front cover we used a basic white colour, this is effective in some ways, because they still stand out, but not as much as the rest of the texts on the front cover, this makes it more minimal.

4. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
For our magazine front cover we have had to use many different programs, such as Photoshop, InDesign, and we have had to use different items, such as the Digital SLR cameras. i have learnt a lot from using all these different features and now I'm a a lot more confident with using these different program's.

We used a Digital SLR camera to take our front cover photo. I have learnt a lot more about these cameras, such as the settings we had to have them on, to take the right sort of photo. we had to have it on the picture of a woman, which is a setting to focus on the person, and then makes the background look blurry, which makes the photo look very effective for the front cover.

On InDesign we used this for our contents page, and we found this changeling to start with, but now we have got the hang of it. We used this program to do any interesting and different font feature for the title 'Contents'. we then thought it would be interesting and changeling to do something different with the text on this page, so we decided to wrap the text around the persons body, we found this changeling to start with, but when you know how to do it, its quite easy. Firstly we had to create a layer on photoshop, and then transfer it on to InDesign.

Now we have been introduced to these different programs to help us create a well designed and professional looking magazine front cover, we would not have been able to do it so easily without these different programs, well it would have been much harder to achieve the standard we have achieved.

We used photoshop for our front cover of our magazine. We found this changeling at the beginning and then we got used to it. we used many different features, such as the move tool, all the basic tools. Then we figured out how the layers on photoshop worked. when we had figured all these different features out, it got quite easy from then on. We learnt how to use the magnetic lasso tool, so part of the masthead was covered up by the picture, which we found quick effective. We found different shapes we could use for a callout, we picked the jigsaw puzzle piece. we used a vibrant and bright colour for this, so it stands out.

Blogger has been very useful for this project, because you can keep track of everything you have done, and you can access it really easily at home. Its also well organized you can understand everything, because it neat and easy to read. Blogger is a useful part of media studies because you know where everything is on blogger, and you can see what you need to finish and if everything is organized and if you are missing anything. And at the side of your blog page, it keeps a track of what you've done and when you did it, which is useful.

Rough front cover sketch

Design Ideas

Will and I have discussed the magazine title and contents of the cover. We came up with the name 'Crisp' and also explored lots of different fonts for the magazine. We discussed the layout and all the other things that will be on the cover.

Timescale: Our deadline is the 7th October which is a week on friday. Between now and then we have 7 lessons to create and produce our student magazine front cover. By the end of this week we will have and edited photograph that will be used on our cover. We will also have started our layout on indesign.

Preliminary Project Planning

From our research we have decided that we want our main picture to be the CVI and take up the majority of the front page. We will use minimal colours and font sizes to make it easier for the reader to see the different stories and topics. Our masthead will probably be in capital letters which will reduce the ascenders and descenders making the magazine look neater and easier to read.

Preliminary Project Research and Planning

'College Lifestyle' is a college magazine, that uses various techniques to attract the student audience. The masthead of 'College Lifestyle' attracts attention by using a bright primary colour. It is in capital letters to make the magazine stand out more. The large picture takes up the majority of the front cover and is the main focal point of the magazine. The layout is fairly minimal and the writing is rather small and uses a sans serif font. They use different colours for each titles, so you can easily see which titles go with which stories. The pink 'splat' callout immediately attracts the eye because it is a completely different colour to anything else on the page.

'College' is another college magazine, that is aimed for the eye of a student. The Masthead of 'College' is bright and bold which attracts attention, they have used capital letters to make the magazine stand out more. This magazine cover is very similar to 'College Lifestyle' with the large picture in the centre, which is the main focus. The writing is rather small and it uses sans serif font. They use a bold colour, such as black for the writing, because there is a white background, so the words stand out, which attracts people, because it is eye catching.

The 'Xbox 360' magazine is not a college magazine but it is still aimed at the same age of people. At first glance the front cover seems to be quite cluttered but if you look closer the layout and content is rather similar to 'College Lifestyle' and 'College'. 'Halo Wars' is written in the same font as the actual game acting as a logo and a recognisable symbol for the intended target audience. Less text is used on the front cover compared to the two magazines. Once again the picture takes up the majority of the front cover and is the main focal point of the magazine. The number '360' stands out because it is in a bright colour compared to the background.
